Thinking about training/conditioning in the classical combat martial arts of the Ninja & Samurai?

This type of training/conditioning is, quite simply, not for everyone. Classes take an enormous commitment, endless patience, sincerity, pliancy, and a willingness to learn things that are completely different from what a person has done or learned in their previous experience.

To begin physical training/conditioning in the way of the classical combat martial arts (Koryu Bujutsu), that incorporates the use of the Bo Staff (Bojutsu), Samurai Sword (Kenjutsu), and other weapons, is to embark on a lifelong study, knowing that one will never "finish" or "perfect" their art.

The books listed here offer a variety of perspectives and observations on what it takes to undertake physical/mental training/conditioning for these classes

Japanese Physical Training by Harrie Irving Hancock
Physical Training for women by Japanese Methods - Harrie Irving Hancock
Asian Fighting Arts - Donn F. Draeger & Robert W. Smith
Classical Bujutsu - Don F. Draeger
Classical Budo - Don F. Draeger
Samurai Sword - Tips for Rapid Skill Advancement - Peter Steeves

Everything valuable in life is, or can be costly, but we must take ourselves as the most “serious of all tasks”.  We must be conscious of everything we do.  It goes without saying that most people are unwilling to accept the cost of developing themselves.  It requires too much energy, it is too frightening, it involves too many glimpses of our imperfections.  For those that seek, you are on your way....

REASSURINGLY EXPENSIVE

Classes are either private or semi-private, with not more than 4 students taken at a time.  Membership is required.

SEMINARS-
In addition to the regular Martial Arts Classes, periodically, we will be holding seminars that will utilize some of the weapons that the kunoichi (female ninjas) specialized in.

NAGINATA
The Naginata is a Japanese bladed weapon with a long wooden handle, that has a blade attached at the end. The total length of the Naginata ranges from 6-9 feet. The naginata was considered one of the weapons most suitable for women, since it allows a woman to keep opponents at a distance, where any advantages in height, weight, and upper body strength would be lessened. Naginata today is an art form that teaches etiquette, respect, patience, self-confidence, and self-control. The practice of Naginata nurtures stamina, beauty and grace of movement, and the building of character through discipline and concentration. Moreover, it prepares individuals to deal with the rigors of life, and in establishing a moral code based on chivalry and honor.

Neko-Te (Cat Hand)

The most-favored weapon was the neko-te, or 'cat hand'. Some of these original neko-te that were shaped like metal gloves had pins standing up from the metal plate covering the back of the hand, designed to trap other weapons and leave minor damage when required, while the long claw-like tips of the fingers were used to stab at arteries and other vital areas, and to scratch through exposed skin.

I wish you all the best in your journey into the fascinating world of Ninjutsu and the Samurai Arts.

Sincerely,
